Another church, Thomaskirche in Leipzig.
This is famous for its connection to Bach.
St. Thomas Church (German: Thomaskirche) is a Lutheran church in Leipzig, Germany. It is most famous as the place where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a Kapellmeister (music director) from 1723 until his death in 1750, and as the location of his remains. (Wikipedia)
We would have liked to go to a concert while we were here, but our timing was off.
There was a rehearsal; going on while we were walking around, always nice to visit a church with music in the background.
Above is Bach's grave, well they think its him, it may just be a representative.
Since 1950, the remains of Johann Sebastian Bach are buried in the Thomaskirche. After his death on 28 July 1750, Bach was laid to rest in the hospital cemetery of the Johanniskirche in Leipzig. With the start of the Bach renaissance in the 19th century, the public started to become interested in his remains and their whereabouts. So, in 1894, the anatomy professor Wilhelm His was commissioned to identify the composer’s remains amongst disinterred bones from the cemetery where Bach had been buried. He arrived at the conclusion that "the assumption that the bones of an elderly man, which had been found in an oak coffin near the Johanneskirche, were the remains of Johann Sebastian Bach" (translated from German) was very likely. (Wikipedia).
.
I always like a church that is still in use by the community, and this one had a kids corner which I always think as a good sign of a healthy church.
Okay, enough churchy stuff, off for a cuppa at this very lovely coffee house.
Dear Readers, that amber liquid is peppermint tea, thank you!
Then we went up to the viewing platform on the Skytower.
Below is Thomaskirche again.
And above is the main square and the Christmas market.
Obviously they built the viewing platform and then realised that the walls were a little low so have erected a temporary fence.
It would be easy to tumble over the edge either accidently or more likely deliberately
Above is our B&B circled in red – a bit hard to see, sorry.
Below is a closer shot.
Another train tomorrow, off to Berlin.
