On the Whale Trail

Hello Dear Readers.

Today we explored the Eden region and our first stop was the Killer Whale museum.

This museum was built to hold the skeleton old 'Old Tom' who was a Killer Whale
and local celebrity who died in 1930.

Now, I'm not a fan of the whaling industry, which now seems appalling.
I will muse further on this topic in a future post,
But, one has to admire the intelligence of the killer whale.

Graham tells me he has read the book 'Killers of Eden' which tell the
story of 'Old Tom" and his pod buddys.

In a nutshell, these killer whales would herd the humpback and minke whales,
trap them in Twofold Bay, then go and wake the whalers.

The whalers would deal with the carcass, give the killers a reward and everyone was happy!

No one taught the killers to do this, it just seemed to happen naturally as
some sort of action and reward response.

And I forgot about the HMAS Onslow and Eden connection,
but here was a reminder.
