Egypt - Friday 23rd May - Edfu then sailing back to Luxor

Our last day on the Nile and our last Temple.

Can you tell that our brains are about to explode with all the  information that they are trying to download? I really admire how these university trained egyptologists, like Caroline, keep all the facts straight in their heads. They have so much enthusiasm for their subject.

Edfu Temple

Everyone in the group is worn out at this point and I think it is obvious by how far we are lagging behind the eternally enthusiastic Caroline.

Yalla, yalla!

Above is the God Horus giving a pharaoh enteral life with the Anhk.

 And here is Horus again.

And we are back to the ship for the last leg back to Luxor.

We go up to the top deck to wait to go through the Esna lock.

I need to talk about the Niles pollution at some point so I'll slip it in here. Although the Nile looks pristine in my photos along the banks are billions of plastic drink bottles. Sometimes they are hidden by reeds, but when there is a break in the reeds they are really obvious. I have a terrible feeling that many of these bottles are coming off the cruise ships. Whenever we are given a bottle of water on a tour, and we have drunk our weight in water, I wonder where the empty bottle will eventually end up.

Floating down to the Med.

I guess the Egyptians don't have  he infrastructure or resources to do any recycling and it will all float away eventually to become someone else's problem.

They are there again, the 'vultures' in boats, throwing things up to the decks and people throwing them back and then landing things in the water.

The kids on the roof goodness!

Then below, we go up again in the lock, photo from our cabin. With Arabic graffiti.

Then its farewell drinks in the lounge.

 And goodbye to our crew.

And a big thank you to the program directors and chef Alex.

Finally its back to Luxor, sailing past Luxor Temple again.

Finally, goodbye to the magnificent River Nile.

Egypt - Thursday 22nd May - Out and about in Aswan

Another beautiful day for a boat ride on the Nile.

If only I can stop hitting my head nearly every time I get on a boat!

Above is an example of how most cruise ships on the Nile are docked. You need to walk through other ships to go ashore. Viking doesn't do that, theirs are all single private docks, fenced and gated.

These below are the Aswan rapids.

The 'vultures' were out on the water in boats trying to sell us stuff. The police shooed them away.

Then after an hours boat trip we reached our destination of a Nubian village.

We visited a family home.

Even the hose had a shop and some of the ladies got henna tattoos.

Who is that for sale at the shop, in the house at the Nubian village? Blimey its Bingo. They truly are global superstars.

Then the coaches met us for a short trip to the school.  These ladies with the baskets on their heads are trying to sell us stuff, one dolla one dolla, and they were aggressive.

The children are learning, Arabic, Nubian and English.

Then back on the coach to meet another motor boat for a short ride to the island were we visited Philae Temple.  Thus is where I finally got to buy some souvenir for the grand kids.

This temple was moved so it wouldn't be flooded by the Aswan dam.

 Gosh its just information overload...

Then we visited a papyrus shop and bought another expensive souvenir.

Then back to the ship at 1:30 for lunch.

Then we set sail for Kom Ombo so bye bye Aswan.

But wait..

There's more, the days not over as we have another temple to visit when we get to Kom Ombo at 4:30.

all the gods and goddesses are on the walls.

Below is our guide Caroline showing us the surgical instruments.

This is a cute thing below!

Congratulations if you got to the end of that epic post. Tomorrow is our last full day on the ship with one last temple. We sail to Edfu tonight.
